brighten my northern sky

Northern Sky (Nick Drake) – Denison Witmer

been a long time that I’ve waited
been a long that I’ve known
been a long time that I’ve wondered through the people I have known

would you love me for my money? could you love me for my head?
would you love me through the winter?
would you love me till I’m dead?

oh, if you would and you could, come blow your horn on high

  • something about the tenor innocence in denison’s voice completely slays me on this version, too. so unvarnished.

  • Seems perfect to start the week with the song we played as our first dance, the day after my wife and I had an incredible weekend together celebrating her birthday and having dated for 7 years. Thanks :)

  • Have you heard Denison’s cover of “Have You Forgotten?” Completely heartbreaking and beautiful.

  • Lucent;liminal and lovely. There is a touching, heartbreaking innocence to this vocal and also a terrible weary sorrow suggesting the waiting has almost broken the singer.

Brighten my northern sky sounding to these ears like help me to sleep tonight or the sound of the morning after the longest of nights.

    Fabulous post.

  • I was a bit suspect to hear anyone cover Nick Drake, but this is quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing

  • Thanks for this…beautiful. Nick Drake’s version made my wedding mix, which was not cheesy and MANY choice songs did not make the cut. Makes me cry (tears of joy) every time.

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."
—Nick Hornby, Songbook
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."
—Hunter S. Thompson

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
