New Thao Nguyen song at SXSW

Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down played several kickass shows in Austin this year. Her set on Friday night at Momo’s was one of the most packed that I personally attended, with a huge line outside left unsatisfied. I squeezed my way in nimbly up to the front and wow — that woman is ferocious and fearless in her music and her stage presence. She knows how to wield a guitar and craft a song with all the right balances.

Thao played a brand new song to the packed house (there’s one blurb of scratchy audio but then my camera gets on the ball):

A new album is expected from Thao this year.

  • I’m not floored, but it’s good to see the creative juices are flowing … and watching her the energy of her performance will pull me in, time and again. Can’t wait to see her in May in SLC (and maybe in Boise in Denver, too, why not?)

  • Yes! I vote for Denver, Wednesday May 6th! And with Samantha Crain, who I missed at SX. Come on down.

  • I was at this show and was completely blown away by her the boundless energy of her performance. I had already liked many of the songs off her record, but this really sealed the deal for me.

I was talking to her after she played, and I noticed she was holding YOUR CARD, which was kind of funny. I would have liked to have thanked you for writing such a great blog, and also for geeking me to Everything Absent Or Distorted, who I would never have known to check out and play on my little nickel and dime college radio show.

SXSW sure is the best overwhelming thing ever, isn’t it?

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."
—Nick Hornby, Songbook
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."
—Hunter S. Thompson

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
