Coldplay covers The Pretenders for Christmas

Coldplay is streaming a lovely cover of the Pretenders song “2000 Miles” on their website with the above description. I’m definitely a Pretenders fan, and this song is filled with a melancholy longing and wistfulness, those things that a greeting-card Christmas isn’t supposed to be . . . but often is.

In these frozen and silent nights
sometimes in a dream you appear
outside under the purple sky
diamonds in the snow sparkle
our hearts were singing
it felt like Christmastime

  • Thanks Heather,
KT Tunstall has a very faithful cover of the tune as well on her (Target stores only) Christmas EP

  • Hey there… Its funny, I never knew this track existed. Did you know it was posted in Dec 2003? Funny how things slip by… Anyway, I’m glad to finally discover this track and wouldn’t have known otherwise.

P.S. If you go through their website to 2007, they just made a new post. It looks like Chris has written 5 more songs in the past two days. Those guys are working hard!

  • I can’t wait to hear more from them.. they have a tough work ahead! critics and fans are expecting new things with a new sound! Chris himself said that it was a triology and then they’d move on.. I wonder what now..

  • As Claudius said to Laertes “No place indeed should murder sanctuarise.”

  • I have this on my Christmas 2006 mix. Heather, help me – I need more songs. I’ve done two straight Xmas mixes that have 15 songs each and I only have 8 this year. I don’t want to start putting artists I don’t like.

  • Heather, this is great! I love it. Thanks for sharing it here.

  • Heather!

Thanks so much for this. I squealed when this opened on my iPod complete with the handwritten note as cover art. Your writing skills are enough to keep me here day in and day out, but these rare gems – not slapped up here – but given the attention to detail only a true music lover would feel the need to do… It makes my day.

    Thanks again!

  • No offense to Chrissie Hynde (though I don’t mind offending Coldplay) but Holly Cole does the best version of this, even if she can’t write lyrics like rock’s iconic rock chick.

  • If I can put in an early Christmas request? Could you re-upload this song? (Coldplay covering the Pretenders “2000 miles”) I just discovered your site, but noticed the download is no longer active. Thank you and peace!

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."

"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
