Brand new Pearl Jam (!!): “Love Reign O’er Me”

Just over a half hour ago, the formidable KISW in Seattle aired the new Pearl Jam song (Who cover) “Love Reign O’er Me” in their, um, Nine O’Clock Cock Fight, which pits two songs against each other. Thanks to Oxypoet, who knows I am as big of a Pearl Jam fan as he is, I have the full audio for you.

As previously mentioned here, this brooding song was recorded for the new Adam Sandler/Don Cheadle movie Reign Over Me, and contains lush orchestration — and several of the most skin-tingling Vedder screams in many moons.

According to the KISW DJ, this won’t actually be on the Reign Over Me soundtrack, only in the movie. That leaves it as fair fodder for the Christmas single?

Waaahooo!

  • c-

Easter. It’s an Easter single. And yes, the PJ boards are already all a-moanin’ about the U2 (and not moaning in a good way, I can assure you). Ingrates.

  • yay!!!! I heard some of this on another Seattle radio station today. I’m a fan of Quadrophenia, and used to lovvvvvvve Pearl Jam. I googled to find out more about this cover, and found yr site, including link to the mp3. :D

Now that I don’t listen to PJ regularly, my physical connection with them is much stronger. Like how I was working in a house behind Eddie’s property, until my employers moved a couple months ago. I’ve been to Studio Litho. Still never met any of the members, though. One time I rode by Matt Cameron while on a bus. Oh yeah! I forgot about when Stone came to the radio station I used to work at, with Brad. But he kept to himself.

Which relates to your post because ummm… it’s about Pearl Jam? Can’t help it when the Pearl Jam love flows. I have to let it.

  • Wow! I’m so behind. I’ve been busy all week and not reading the blogs. I heard this song this morning on Howard Stern, of all places.
Heather, I was hoping you had it!
    thanks!

  • Pianist could also be brendan o’brien who kisw dj says produced the track. It does have a certain clarity that i associate with the bo’b albums.

  • On top of being my favorite band, Pearl Jam is also my favorite cover band ever. That shit totally rocks.

  • I cannot get enough of this song! The story seems interesting…but with the addition of this tune in the movie, it makes it a must-see!
I’d go out on a limb and say it’s their BEST cover yet!
    Thanks Heather for posting!
    PEARL JAM ROCKS!

  • Pretty good cover, but I think The Who’s version is much better.Roger
Daltrey’s vocals on it are spine chilling.Oh well,I guess they can’t keep using Who originals in every movie.I love Eddie mostly because he loves The Who,but PJ is a damn good live band.

  • Pearl Jam keeps on surprising…
Great cover from an ever reliable band of our time… Classic covered in its own classical way… Love Reign for Pearl Jam Forever

  • you also can listen to it here http://www.rhapsody.com/pearljam/lovereignoerme
just thought I would share enjoy

    pearljamroxs — February 6, 2007 @ 11:05 pm

  • im sorry, but no one can cover the who. it just can’t be done. the cover was terrible in my opinion and pearl jam should shove a cork up their ass for that lousy peformance of a great song by the who. i bet half of you don’t even realize this is a song by: THE WHO, one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands of all time. Check out the original version SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS CRAP.

  • John,

    You’re an idiot.

    Anonymous — March 10, 2007 @ 8:48 pm

  • No band could have covered Love Reign O’er Me better than Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. I can only guess that Pete Townsend is flattered. Vedder loves the Who and pays proper respect in this great cover of an all-time great.

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
