Ryan Adams Bedhead, Volumes 4 & 5

I know that I promised the rest of these live Ryan Adams Bedhead compilation recordings a long time ago, and posted Disc One, Disc Two, and Disc Three, but then fell off the wagon. I kind of figured that after the ginormous orgy of Ryan Adams posts following the San Francisco concert that I would just give it a rest for a few weeks.

But now I’m recovered and am going to go ahead and post up these last two batches, there is some really fantastic live stuff on them from the 2005 tour. Check out the scorching, bluesy rendition of “I See Monsters,” the stunning piano of “Nightbirds,” and darned if you can’t help but laugh at the “Summer of ’69″ (BRYAN Adams cover). That’s the spirit, sport.

Also, I was reminded of this vastly entertaining interview with Ryan Adams via Pitchfork last year. Worth a read (or re-read). It’s like listening in on a phone conversation or something, very fly-on-the-wall.

  • thanks for these, dear lady ;-))

meant to grab them a while back, but forgot.

worth it alone for the cover of Summer of ’69 — hysterical ad-lib — followed by the brilliant segue into the ‘Mats’ / Westerberg’s “Talent Show” as its coda: GREAT stuff!

i’ve always been amazed by Ryan’s very keen ear, making connection of chord progressions etc.

love jp bowersock’s lead, too. i do miss Bowersock’s sound being in the Cards’ mix — much preferred to Casals, even if Neil fits the jam-band aesthetic much better, if you will.

  • Great interview. He’s a piece of work, but you know, all in all I don’t think he’s a bad guy. Very driven, and he obviously takes no crap. He’s blessed us with some amazing music, and I feel there’s a lot more to come. Thanks for the post, Heather.

  • This has absolutely nothing to do with this entry, but I thought you’d like to know that Pearl Jam played Leash in Boston last night for the first time since 1994.

  • There are 5 different bedhead Series – for a totla of (I think) 19 CD’s worth of material. So, if you’re wondering which one you have, good luck. The best place to try and find out is http://www.answeringbell.com.

    Best,

  • thanks for this stuff. it’s interesting that ryan plays that bit from “talent show” – he played a show here in mpls in december 2004 where he called out westerberg, referring to him as a “bitter old bitch”, but then extolling his virtues as an influence. it was a great show to be at; i felt like i was witnessing a nervous breakdown breakdown right on stage.

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."

"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
