Paul Westerberg & Replacements: b-sides, rarities and live goodies

Sometimes in this world someone takes time to do something nice simply out of the goodness of their heart. Recently, friendly-guy Jerry took the time to make and mail me two CDs jam-packed with some great rarities, b-sides, live cuts, and non-album tracks from some of my favorite rough rockers Paul Westerberg & The Replacements. Why? Just because.

Now I share my largesse with you. Both are in zip format, and there are some real standouts here (and tons of covers, which I find fascinating to see how they put their own stamp on such a wide variety of influences). And thanks to Dean for filling in some of the provenance blanks.

  • Wow, this is a colossal treasure trove. Thanks so much for posting and then re-posting. I miss hearing these guys on the radio. I wish radio didn’t suck. But I’m getting off track. Thanks again. That said, among the Replacements tracks, mp3s for “Hey Good Lookin” and “Tossin and Turnin” are missing, at least for those of us who have to download one track at a time.

  • …and “Who’s Gonna Take Us Alive” is missing too.

  • Thank you so much for posting these! I’ve been looking for the Festical version of “Dice Behind Your Shades” for ages! Ditto “33rd of July”. Really great stuff! Thanks again. And… get well soon, Paul!

  • bless you heather! i also had a bunch of this stuff but there were songs i had never heard before! and i thought i heard everything. i still think “kissing in action” is one of the best replacement songs ever made- thank you for giving me an mp3. i’m sure the song never made it to an album because it sounds too bubblegummy and paul prob hates it, but it still sends goosebumps down my spine when i hear the opening riff, a riff to rival some of keef’s best for the stones. thanks, john from lancaster, pa

  • Wow, these are great. You’re helping me get back in touch with my inner Mat. By the way, track #20 (Kissing In Action) is missing. Instead, there’s a duplicate of #19 (Ought To Get Love).

  • Appreciate this staying up as long as it has. Managed to delete almost everything yesterday afternoon. And am building up the files again. Replacements/Westerberg on the top of the list and I still had fuel/friends bookmarked. Sometimes the world is very friendly. Thanks.

  • Hi Heather … I’m the 27th person to write ‘thank you’ here since you posted these two gems on the web in 2006.

I’m amazed that these songs are still here, and I want to thank you for giving me the same feeling I used to get when I would buy a tape, a record or a cd, and couldn’t wait to get home and listen to it. Over and over again. Just like I did with 14 Songs.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. :)

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."

"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."
—Hunter S. Thompson

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
