I have to say the performance by Strummer & friends in the pick-up truck and afterward in the motel room is some of the greatest drunk acting ever. Though something tells me they weren’t acting . . .

Even though Pop wasn’t nearly the album Achtung Baby was, the Popmart tour was really a good extension of the whole Zoo TV/Outside Broadcast tours. i mean, that monster screen, the McDonald’s rip-off arches, and the lemon. The Freaking Lemon!!
Totally Awesome!

I don’t care what all the indie hipster kids say, these days: U2 is the tightest band of all-time and there is no sight more badass than Edge strutting down the aisle with his cowboy hat and ’70s mustache. I adore the ’90s U2. Sadly, my first concert was only this past Vertigo tour. (Though, it was in Dublin, so that’s got to count for something!)
Also, kudos to you, Heather. I constantly see music blogs trashing U2, particularly Bono, these days. It’s nice to see a little appreciation for a change.

You might also like Chungking Express, from Wong Kar-wai. It is a 90’s Hong Kong film with a similar atmospheric mood, three stories interwoven and not together, beautiful cinematography, and memorable characters. It’s mainly a love story, and a why-are-we-here story.. it’s also a comedy/drama.
Fallen Angels from the same director is similarly three parts that meet but don’t. This time about a hitman. Both of these films would complement the tone of Jarmusch.
Tarantino is a big fan of this director.
Of course Jarmusch always seems to get great fringe singers in his movies, and who can forget The Way of the Samurai… awesome,

No love for “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” by Gil-Scot Heron?

Popmart was my first time seeing U2, but my love for Zoo TV-era Bono knows no bounds. If you haven’t checked out the Zoo TV Sydney DVD that was released in the fall, I highly recommend it. I think most of it is up on YouTube now, but it’s so much better on DVD.
This blog has that entire promo CD available (it’s down near the bottom of the page), along with a lot of great shows: http://www.u2-thespiralstaircase.blogspot.com/

I spent at least a good hour+ last night watching Zoo TV tour footage on YouTube from U2, and then I open my email this morning to find that Cara has fantastically read my mind with this little outtake snippet gem from that era, off an obscure promo cd:
Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad (Airplane Version) – Bono
I missed the Zoo TV tour (look at this opener! Music starts at 4:15 after the video sensory overload, and what a song, with those grinding, excoriating guitar licks) . . .
. . . But I caught the PopMart one in ’97, a tour that which usually started each show with the insanely awesome song ‘Mofo’, and the effortlessly cool 4 strutting their way in through cadres of adoring fans in fine swaggering fashion. I do find myself loving the excess of that whole 5-year era:
Name: Heather Browne
Location: Colorado, originally by way of California
Giving context to the torrent since 2005.
"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."
—Nick Hornby, Songbook
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel."
—Hunter S. Thompson
Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
