so hold my hand, consign me not to darkness

Mumford & Sons played two new songs last night to a fervently enthusiastic crowd at their sold-out Denver show. One song, tentatively titled “Broken Crown,” was just written yesterday at soundcheck here in Colorado. You know, I was probably doing something like eating an apple at my desk at the same time they were out composing potent new songs like these — just, you know, at soundcheck.

The other new one, “Below My Feet,” is a slow-building piano-based shot of redemption, and was written in Melbourne this summer during their Australian tour. Both are compelling.

apologies for the few spots of fuzzy loud audio

Everything I wrote after I saw them in Telluride in June still holds true about their live show last night. What supernovas.

Setlist from last night posted over at Fuel/Friends Facebook page.

  • I’m just super happy when I can finish my lunch during my lunch break, and these guys are pounding out new jams? Not that I didn’t know I was in the wrong business, but really this just drives it home.

Love both of these. I need to catch them soon.

  • “Broken Crown” uses lyrics from their song “To Darkness” that they released on an iTunes Live from the London Festival ’09. Both are very good and I can’t thank you enough for sharing this video.

  • How I envy you that experience! I live near London and I haven’t yet managed to see these guys live. Thank you so much for sharing!

  • Hmmm… Interesting that they decided to scrap ‘To Darkness’ as a song, as Katie noted above. A studio version was actually released as the b-side to ‘Little Lion Man’. Bart digs the horns but prefers the original at this point. He’s excited to see them in two weeks! Thanks for the preview, HB!

  • Broken Crown was also performed as To Darkness/Kripa with the Indian folk band the Dharohar Project! It’s so good!

"I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there's something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It's the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part..."

Mp3s are for sampling purposes, kinda like when they give you the cheese cube at Costco, knowing that you'll often go home with having bought the whole 7 lb. spiced Brie log. They are left up for a limited time. If you LIKE the music, go and support these artists, buy their schwag, go to their concerts, purchase their CDs/records and tell all your friends. Rock on.
